WHAT THE FONT ? (Week 6)
SUMMARY
- WINNING FONT: This means establishing the start of our game's art direction early on. But an unforseen licensing issue came up. We may end up going with second place winner.
- MORE TREASURE: We've expanded the pay table and available metals for search
- INTRODUCING WALLET: Once you sell your treasure, fill up to buy more gear for more hunting.
- CREDITS LIVE UPDATE: When your bag fills you can see how much worth you've collected for pay out.
IT WAS CLOSE
I asked you, family, and close friends what they thought. Everyone from the layperson to the experienced artist all had a range of opinions. The winning font was a close call, but the winner was the font that was the most readable and the most pleasing to the eye for the majority of folks I spoke to.
I like the way it looks in our inventory menu. Maybe it could be bigger.
But overall, it's not a bad fit for the win. But I'm not sure we'll get to keep it.
The options meny wasn't bad either but it's temporarily disabled until we get the core of our game completed and bug free. It's not a priority to chance resolution but know it's there when the time comes. Our second place winner was a close call. To be honest, I felt torn. But in trying both the first and second place typefaces, they were great choices and while hesitiant in some cases, I'll admit lesson learned: trust the audience.
THE PROBLEM
I need to admit, I forgot to look at the licensing agreement. Even thought Dimitri, the font, won, I had forgotten to look at the agreement.
If only it were as simple as paying a fee and moving on. You could ask "why didn't you do this BEFORE you asked us to vote?" It's a fair question.
I was in a hurry. Wanting the best choice in short time, going over dozens upon dozens of type made me skip the fine print. It's a lesson learned to always be wary of it. I'm not sure if we'll be able to use the winning font. It's the sad truth.
Meanwhile, the second place winner is totally open, free, and as of this writing may end up our defacto winner. I've reached out to the creator of our winning font to see if they would grant a license in hopes it's not too expensive or soul gouging. I love fonts but it's a business, they're not easy to make, but can have a world of a difference on the impression of one's product.
The sooner you work out your art direction, the prettier your game will be. It's important. As painful as it is to go through this, I feel it's going to pay off in dividends but will admit, we need to push the playable demo asap.
TRUST THE AUDIENCE
I'm starting to realize, the majority of votes really work. I wasn't sure about the second place option but I think it works! Here you can see it applied to the options and inventory menu. The winning font won by a small margin but wide acclaim. Yet it's great to have a fallback. We may have our plans but the Lord is in the end result.
PAYDAY
More treasure was added to the game's core. It's way more fun knowing there's a great vareity to search for. Until this project, I had no idea metals like Osmium and Rhenium existed, but they do.
In future iterations of the game, we may expand it to look for gems, meteor fragments, or gems. More than anything, it's interesting to see how we can layer what you find. Certain devices may be able to find certain metals or gems.
TreasureRank | Worth | Probability | Color |
---|---|---|---|

MORE TO COME, STAY TUNED
The demo is coming along. The core is being refactored to make sure it works bug free. When is it rolling out? Not sure but soon (hopefully). For more details on what's going on, check out our task tracker list.
